Authigenic carbonates from methane seeps of the Congo deep-sea fan ArchiMer
Pierre, Catherine; Fouquet, Yves.
Submersible investigations with the ROV Victor 6000 of some pockmark structures on the seafloor of the Congo deep-sea fan have shown that they are active venting sites of methane-rich fluids, associated with abundant fauna and carbonate crusts. Moreover, methane hydrates have been observed both outcropping and deep in the sediments in the centre of the "Regab" giant pockmark. Authigenic carbonates, mostly calcite sometimes mixed with aragonite, are cementing the sedimentary matrix components and fauna; diatoms are abundant but only as moulds, indicating that biogenic silica dissolution occurred in situ synchronous with carbonate precipitation. The occurrence of diagenetic barite and pyrite in some carbonate crusts demonstrates that they can be formed...

Evidence of paleo-cold seep activity from the Bay of Bengal, offshore India ArchiMer
Mazumdar, A.; Dewangan, P.; Joaeo, H. M.; Peketi, A.; Khosla, V. R.; Kocherla, M.; Badesab, F. K.; Joshi, R. K.; Roxanne, P.; Ramamurty, P. B.; Karisiddaiah, S. M.; Patil, D. J.; Dayal, A. M.; Ramprasad, T.; Hawkesworth, C. J.; Avanzinelli, R..
We report evidence of paleo-cold seep associated activities, preserved in methane-derived carbonates in association with chemosynthetic clams (Calyptogena sp.) from a sediment core in the Krishna-Godavari basin, Bay of Bengal. Visual observations and calculations based on high-resolution wet bulk density profile of a core collected on board R/V Marion Dufresne (May 2007) show zones of sharp increase in carbonate content (10-55 vol%) within 16-20 meters below seafloor (mbsf). The presence of Calyptogena clam shells, chimneys, shell breccias with high Mg calcite cement, and pyrite within this zone suggest seepage of methane and sulfide-bearing fluid to the seafloor in the past. Highly depleted carbon isotopic values (delta(13)C ranges from -41 to -52% VPDB)...

Methane seepage at Vestnesa Ridge (NW Svalbard) since the Last Glacial Maximum ArchiMer
Schneider, A.; Panieri, G.; Lepland, A.; Consolaro, C.; Cremiere, A.; Forwick, M.; Johnson, J. E.; Plaza-faverola, A.; Sauer, S.; Knies, J..
Multiple proxies in the geological record offshore NW Svalbard track shallow subseafloor diagenesis and seafloor methane seepage during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) extent and the disintegration of the Svalbard Barents Sea Ice Sheet (SBIS). Vestnesa Ridge, located at 79°N and in 1200 m water depth, is one of the northernmost known active methane seep sites and is characterised by a subseafloor fluid flow system, numerous seafloor pockmarks and gas flares in the water column. In this study, we develop a Late Pleistocene and Holocene stratigraphic framework, use stable oxygen and carbon isotope signatures (δ18O, δ13C) of benthic and planktic foraminifera, the mineralogical and carbon isotope composition of methane-derived authigenic carbonate (MDAC) and...

Multi-disciplinary investigation of fluid seepage on an unstable margin: The case of the Central Nile deep sea fan ArchiMer
Bayon, Germain; Loncke, L.; Dupre, Stephanie; Caprais, Jean-claude; Ducassou, E.; Duperron, Sebastien; Etoubleau, Joel; Foucher, Jean-paul; Fouquet, Yves; Gontharet, S.; Henderson, G. M.; Huguen, Caroline; Klaucke, I.; Mascle, J.; Migeon, S.; Olu-le-roy, Karine; Ondreas, Helene; Pierre, C.; Sibuet, Myriam; Stadnitskaia, A.; Woodside, J..
We report on a multidisciplinary study of cold seeps explored in the Central Nile deep-sea fan of the Egyptian margin. Our approach combines in situ seafloor observation, geophysics, sedimentological data, measurement of bottom-water methane anomalies, pore-water and sediment geochemistry, and Th-230/U dating of authigenic carbonates. Two areas were investigated, which correspond to different sedimentary provinces. The lower slope, at similar to 2100 m water depth, indicates deformation of sediments by gravitational processes, exhibiting slope-parallel elongated ridges and seafloor depressions. In contrast, the middle slope, at similar to 1650 m water depth, exhibits a series of debris-flow deposits not remobilized by post-depositional gravity processes....

Sulfate-dependent anaerobic oxidation of methane at a highly dynamic bubbling site in the Eastern Sea of Marmara (Çinarcik Basin) ArchiMer
Teichert, B. M. A.; Chevalier, N.; Gussone, N.; Bayon, Germain; Ponzevera, Emmanuel; Ruffine, Livio; Strauss, H..
During the MARSITECruise expedition in November 2014 on board the RV Pourquoi Pas?, multidisciplinary sampling was carried out with the ROV Victor 6000 in order to investigate biogeochemical processes taking place at cold seep environments in the Sea of Marmara. Pore water, bottom water, sediment and authigenic carbonate samples were collected from two short push cores (MRS-DV5-PC04 − 8 cm, MRS-DV5-PC01 − 12.5 cm) at an active methane bubbling site in the southeastern part of the Çinarcik Basin. Sulfate sulfur and oxygen isotope data as well as sulfide isotope data indicate that sulfate-dependent anaerobic oxidation of methane is the dominant process in the sediments. This is confirmed by archaeal lipids diagnostic for anaerobic methane oxidizers detected...
